Understanding YouTube Content ID
When you upload a video to YouTube, you may encounter a copyright claim if your content includes material that is protected by copyright.
This happens because when distributors deliver digital recordings to DSPs such as Spotify and Apple Music, they also supply these recordings to YouTube’s Content ID system. Content ID uses the audio to create a reference file. Combining this with the metadata and ownership information, Content ID creates an asset. An asset acts as a digital fingerprint, enabling YouTube to scan its platform for matches.
When Content ID detects a match, it automatically issues a claim on behalf of the rights holder. This ensures that copyrighted material is identified and managed according to the rights holder’s chosen policy, which will be one of the following:
Monetise: Adverts are placed on the video, and revenue may be generated for the rights holder.
Track: The video remains available, but the rights holder collects viewership data and analytics.
Block: The video is blocked and cannot be viewed in certain regions or worldwide.
A copyright claim can also refer to a copyright removal request or takedown notice. This is a legal request usually submitted by a copyright owner or their representative when they identify their copyright-protected content on YouTube without their authorisation. If you receive a copyright removal request, this will result in a copyright strike being applied to your channel.
