An ongoing tips segment on how to maximise your marketing output, even if the well has run dry.
Speed Is the Independent Artist’s Superpower
Independent artists often underestimate one of their biggest advantages. Speed. Large labels and big campaigns usually involve layers of approval from teams of people across marketing departments & artist management, scheduling, with long lead times. Trust me, I’ve sat around those big oval tables (think of the grand table scene in 24 Hour Party People) for a topic that needed discussion three weeks prior, and by the time we got out feeling like the moment to react had already passed. Whereas independent musicians can react instantly to trends, experiment freely, and post content in real time. That flexibility can become a powerful marketing tool, especially when working with little or no budget. Instead of waiting weeks to perfect a campaign, independent artists can test ideas daily, adapt quickly, and discover what genuinely connects with their audience.
In today’s landscape, consistency and personality can often outperform expensive promotion. An artist who regularly shares behind the scenes clips, rough demos, creative experiments, or authentic moments can build stronger audience relationships than a heavily polished but ultimately over stylised, unimaginative or unrelatable campaign. The ability to pivot quickly also means independent artists can take advantage of trending sounds, viral formats, or cultural moments while they are still relevant, something larger operations often struggle to do efficiently.
Ultimately, agility is a form of currency. Independent artists may not have the budgets of major labels, but they can move faster, communicate more directly, and create a stronger sense of connection with listeners. In a crowded digital space, that authenticity and responsiveness can be far more valuable than expensive advertising.
